Cleaning Your Vitamix Blender

One of the best things about having a high-powered blender, like a Vitamix or Blendtec , is that it is super easy to clean. If you’ve juiced fruits and vegetables in the past, you know how difficult it is to clean a juicer, but cleaning your blender is a different story.

You should get in the habit of cleaning your blender immediately after use, or at the very least rinsing it very well. This will prevent the leftover contents from sticking to the walls of the container. Avoid scrubbers and the scratchy green side of sponges, as they will definitely scratch your container. I personally rinse the container with water immediately after I pour out the contents. I’ve done this for years and my containers are still clean and clear.

In most cases, it’s very easy to thoroughly clean it; simply fill the container about half way with warm water, add a drop or two of dish liquid, and blend on high speed for about a minute. If your particular model has a cleaning cycle, use that pre-programmed setting instead of blending on high speed. Finally, rinse out all of the soap with cold water and allow it to dry.

Cleaning your Blender

Sticky mixtures

If you’ve used your blender to create a thicker, sticky substance, such as peanut butter or hummus, you may need to scrub the sides a bit before cleaning (as mentioned earlier, avoid a scratchy sponge, scrub with the soft side of the sponge and use hot water). It’s not recommended by most manufacturers that you put the blender in the dishwasher, but you can check your owner’s manual for more information on your particular model.

Cloudy containers

If your Vitamix or Blendtec container has developed a cloudy, white film, you can easily clean that as well. Just pour 1 cup of white vinegar into the container and fill the rest with warm water. Let the container sit for several hours or overnight, then scrub the film away using a soft, wet sponge.

Following these simple tips will help keep your blender looking as good as brand new!

  1. wonder what would be the result of running the vitamin with water and a magic eraser. would that be an effective way to clean a cloudy vitamin canister.

  2. Hello, this is all very interesting. My low-profile 64-ounce Vitamix container was terribly discoloured, with green and orange stains (spinach, turmeric, etc.), calcium build-up, etc. I did some baking soda scrubs, then tried vinegar with the baking soda, etc. Most of it has come off, thanks to the soaks, and lots of elbow grease. Since then, I have not been letting the container air-dry, which I used to do. That seems to help eliminate any calcium build-up (which was really hard to get off). I would like to try the Oxy-clean method, letting it sit overnight. But is there a danger that letting liquid sit overnight in the container will damage or ruin the seal? I don’t want to have to buy another expensive jug. Thanks very much.

  3. I followed Valerie’s advice. 1 cup Oxy Clean and water !!! Amazing! My blender looks brand new ! And it really had a lot of yuck build up. I tried everything. Oxy Clean is the best!
    Thanks Valerie

  4. The soaking in vinegar and warm water didn’t clean the film, the running it on high didn’t help, nor using a scrubbie. It still has a green film as soon as it dries. I always clean it right away with dish soap, except once, and maybe that did it. Any other suggestions?

      Hi Dawn,
Thanks for visiting blenderreviews.us! So sorry to hear you have problems with your container filming. You didn’t mention the brand of manufacturer, and not all use the same type of materials for their container.

I’ve owned and used a K-Tec (prior to Blendtec purchase) and Vitamix blenders for over 10 years and have been able to use the above steps to clear up any staining/films on my containers. It’s only happened once or twice though.

I’d suggest contacting your manufacturer for suggestions. You can reach Vitamix 800.848.2649 or via email at service@vitamix.com. And Blendtec at 1-800-748-5400. I’ve found both of them to provide excellent support.

      1. I have a Vitamix and I too have had a terrible time in keeping it clean. I always clean it right after use, according to manufacturer instructions. I love my Vitamix, but I am very unhappy with how the container has held up. As per your advice, I am attempting to descale it with vinegar now. I saw some comments about using OxyClean…my only concern is that I don’t know about using this product in the blender that I make my food in…but then I suppose that dish detergent isn’t edible either. I’ll try anything at this point…it is very disappointing to have a $600+ appliance look like it’s filthy, especially when you take good care of it. I thought that I was perhaps the only one experiencing this issue? I see that I am not.

          Hi Alli,
So sorry to hear about your problems with your container. The vinegar tip has worked wonders for my containers over the years, but it’s a rare occasion when they look cloudy or dirty looking. I’ve tried OxyClean as one of our readers suggested, and that worked equally well. After that, I put fresh water in the container and blended it on high and repeated a couple of times to be sure I got all of it out of there. Give it a try, I hope you get great results with it.

    2. I’ve had this problem with 2 different brand blenders. I tried the lemon with vinegar, the baking soda with vinegar, the magic eraser, running the blender with dish soap immediately after use – scrubbing did get rid of some of it but it’s very stubborn. Yesterday I tried something and was astounded at how well it worked . I filled the blender with warm water leaving about 2 inches below the top. Then I added a cup of powdered oxy clean and let it sit overnight. Amazing results!
