“Oh my goodness, that’s so expensive!” You’ll often hear me exclaiming that to myself in the grocery store aisle, especially in the organic/natural foods section. For various reasons, I choose to feed my family whole foods that have not been modified and are not loaded with chemicals or preservatives. Unfortunately, that causes our grocery bill to be significantly more expensive than an average family’s.
However, thanks to my favorite kitchen appliance (aka – my Vitamix!), I can save money by making certain things homemade, like oat flour.
If you’re sensitive to gluten, oat flour is a fantastic alternative. It’s also a nice addition to baked goods, and a great backup for those times you accidentally run out of flour…because we have all had those moments!
Like I mentioned, I don’t buy foods that contain chemicals or preservatives. I can buy organic oats (which has only one ingredient on the label…organic oats). Toss 2 cups into the Vitamix dry grains container, run on high for about 60 seconds, and I have a batch of homemade oat flour!
If I plan enough in advance, I try to place the oats in the freezer for an hour or two before I need to grind them. This chills them so they don’t overheat while being pulverized in the blender. It’s not necessary, but it is helpful.
You can substitute approximately 1½ cups of oat flour for every 1 cup of all purpose flour. Happy baking!

- 2 cups oats (any kind - but the variety will determine how long you need to blend them for)
- Optional: place the oats in the freezer 1-2 hours before you plan to grind them.
- Pour the oats into the Vitamix dry grains container.
- Run on high for 60 seconds, until all of the oats are evenly ground.
Make sure that the blades are continually pushing the oats upwards, and the top of the oat pile is falling down the center of the cup into the blades. If you don’t see this motion, stop the blender and stir the oats surrounding the blades.
Instant oats should blend faster that whole oats since they are already partially ground.
